Welcome to Gracefield

The history of the Gracefield area dates back to 1840, with the arrival of its first pioneer, Augustin Éthyer, originally from Saint-Martin-de-Laval, who lived to the age of 104. He passed away on July 28, 1878.

It was on his land, located at the edge of the Wright brothers’ forestry property, that settlers built the first chapel the following year. During the week, the chapel also served as a school.

In 1851, the “Mission de la Visitation,” which at the time was home to approximately sixty families, changed its name to Wright. It would later also bear the names Pickanock and Victory.

The name Wright honoured the memory of Philemon Wright, the founder of Hull. The name Picanoc, meaning “walnut,” comes from the Algonquin word pakanak, derived from pakan, meaning “nut,” and reflects Gracefield’s location at the confluence of the Gatineau and Picanoc rivers. The origins of the name “Victory,” however, remain unknown.

On March 13, 2002, the Village Municipality of Gracefield, the Municipality of Northfield and the Township Municipality of Wright amalgamated to form a new town named Wright-Gracefield-Northfield. On February 22, 2003, its name was changed to Gracefield.

Today, Gracefield offers a wide range of services and businesses to meet the needs of local residents, as well as the thousands of cottagers and tourists who visit the surrounding area each year.
