Welcome to Maniwaki

Irish, French and Indigenous peoples all contributed to the development of Maniwaki and lived together harmoniously. Maniwaki was officially founded in 1851 and obtained city status in 1957.

The year 1974 will forever remain etched in the memory of the region’s residents. On May 14, the Gatineau River overflowed, causing the Désert River to overflow as well. Water levels rose at an alarming rate of three to six inches per hour. In total, 1,000 homes in Maniwaki and the surrounding area were flooded, and approximately 3,000 people were evacuated. Damage amounted to several million dollars, but fortunately, no one was injured.

Since then, Maniwaki has continued to grow, particularly around two sectors that have greatly contributed to its development: forestry and tourism.

Located in the heart of the Vallée-de-la-Gatineau, Maniwaki is a welcoming city offering a full range of services.

Maniwaki means “Land of Mary” in Algonquin. More than 150 years ago, the Oblate Fathers established a mission here. Soon after, lumber merchants, farmers, tradespeople, business owners and professionals settled in the area, drawn in particular by the abundant forest resources.
