Description
The Paugan Generating Station is the largest electricity production facility in the Outaouais region. This hydroelectric dam, operated by Hydro-Québec, is located near the municipality of Low. It was built in 1928 and restored in 1956.
With an initial capacity of 202 MW, later increased to 206 MW, the station played a key role in Quebec’s energy history. At the time, its 220 kV transmission line stretching over 440 km to Toronto was considered a major technological breakthrough.
By following Paugan Road, visitors arrive at the station, where it is possible to drive across the dam and enjoy panoramic views of the Gatineau River, both north and south. The 35-metre-high waterfalls are truly impressive.
On the central island, remnants of an old timber slide can still be seen—a testament to the region’s forestry past. North of the dam, tugboats once operated along this stretch of the river.
