Description
The Mercier Dam was built between 1924 and 1927 with the goal of creating one of the most impressive structures in the Outaouais region. Standing 25 meters high and stretching 345 meters long, this massive structure led to the formation of the vast Baskatong Reservoir. It serves to regulate the flow of the Gatineau River and supplies water to the hydroelectric power stations at Paugan, Chelsea, and Rapides-Farmers, which are still in operation today.
Before the dam was built, Lake Baskatong was only about 5 miles long. Since its construction, nearly 800 miles of shoreline now surround the reservoir. The Baskatong River and its twelve lakes were submerged beneath the waters of the new basin.
In 2008, the dam was converted into a hydroelectric power station, with an installed capacity of 50.5 megawatts.
