A bit of history:
The name Bras‑Coupé–Désert comes from two waterways that run through the territory: the Désert Lake and River, as well as the Bras‑Coupé Lake and River. These names have been in use since the second half of the 19th century. The word “Désert” is believed to be an adaptation of the Algonquin name Kitigan Zibi, meaning “river of the garden” or “farm river.” There was once a clearing at the mouth of the Désert River, where the town of Maniwaki now stands. As for the name “Bras‑Coupé,” it refers to the distinctive shape of Bras‑Coupé Lake.
