These names have been in use since the second half of the 19th century. The word \u201cD\u00e9sert\u201d is believed to be an adaptation of the Algonquin name <em>Kitigan Zibi<\/em>, meaning \u201criver of the garden\u201d or \u201cfarm river.\u201d There was once a clearing at the mouth of the D\u00e9sert River, where the town of Maniwaki now stands.
