Kazabazua, One of the Oldest Municipalities in the Gatineau Valley<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The history of Kazabazua dates back to the early 19th century, with the arrival of the first settlers around 1835. At that time, the area was known as “Hoganville,” named after the Hogan family, the first pioneers to settle there. They were later joined by other families, including the Gabie, Chamberlain, and Pritchard families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About twenty years later, the Township of Aylwin was established and officially incorporated as a municipality on January 1, 1862. Although the name Kazabazua had been used prior to the municipality’s creation, it was not officially recognized as the village’s name until 1932. In 1976, Kazabazua became the municipality’s official legal name, replacing “Township of Aylwin.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Kazabazua is home to several heritage buildings, including the Mahoney Flour Mill, Trinity United Church, St. Stephen’s Church, the Ronald Rochon House, and St. Andrew’s Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kazabazua River and the broad plain through which it flows are among the municipality’s most notable natural attractions. The Kazabazua Plain is considered one of Quebec’s most unique geomorphological features. It consists of dunes and peatlands that provide habitat for numerous rare and threatened plant species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These dunes are believed to have formed through wind action on sediments left behind by the retreat of the Champlain Sea more than 7,500 years ago. The Gatineau Valley Linear Park crosses a large portion of this plain, offering hikers remarkable landscapes that are both rich in biodiversity and surprisingly open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
